French Violin Paul Bisch 1930 , GE-210
Paul BISCH, son of Ignace BISCH—an accomplished craftsman for the renowned firm Jérôme Thibouville‑Lamy—began his professional journey within the same prestigious workshop. He later worked for a period under the noted maker Léon Mougenot before returning to Thibouville‑Lamy to continue his training under the direction of Marius Didier.
Following the First World War in 1919, BISCH was offered a significant opportunity to join the distinguished Parisian atelier Caressa & Français. During his time there, he mastered the art of violin restoration and gained direct exposure to outstanding instruments representing various European schools.
Workshop
After refining his craft in Paris, Paul BISCH returned to Mirecourt to establish his own workshop at 2 Rue Chantaire.
In 1923, he entered into partnership with Christian Olivier, founding a Paris workshop at 74 Rue de Turbigo dedicated to producing fine violins under the name “A La Lyre.” Within this collaboration, BISCH served as the technical director and primary maker, while Olivier managed the commercial aspects of the business.
Their partnership continued until 1929. Around 1930, as BISCH’s reputation grew steadily, he relocated his main workshop to 8 Rue Saint‑Georges in Mirecourt, where he continued producing high‑quality instruments.
Works
Throughout his career, Paul BISCH crafted an estimated 500 instruments, ranging from student‑level violins to professional concert instruments. His finest creations bear his official brand stamp, signature, and serial number—hallmarks of authenticity and craftsmanship excellence.
