The Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (JTL) – a cradle of violin-making excellence

The Jérôme Thibouville‑Lamy (JTL) workshop stands as one of Mirecourt’s most influential centers of violin making. Although JTL often named its instruments after other well‑known luthiers—a practice that sometimes caused confusion about provenance—this strategy was intentional. These names were not merely marketing tools; many JTL instruments genuinely lived up to the craftsmanship and tonal expectations associated with the makers they referenced.

Contrary to the misconception that JTL produced only mass‑manufactured instruments, the workshop was in fact a major hub of accumulated expertise. Generations of technical knowledge converged there, brought by skilled artisans who joined the company and carried forward by the many masters who completed significant stages of their training within its walls.

The workshop’s influence extended far beyond Mirecourt. Notable makers such as Karl Siebenhüner, whose father trained under Gabriel Lemböck and worked for George Gemünder in New York, were sent to JTL specifically to refine their craft before taking over family ateliers. Paul Kaul, later renowned for his own workshops in Nantes and Paris, also began his training at Thibouville‑Lamy. The list of distinguished luthiers connected to JTL is extensive, including Marius Didier, Charles Fétique, and many others.

These makers went on to establish respected ateliers of their own, demonstrating that even as Mirecourt’s instrument‑making industry expanded rapidly, there remained a vital place for traditional, craft‑driven workshops. Their careers also showed that meaningful dialogue could exist between large‑scale production and artisanal craftsmanship—two approaches often seen as incompatible.

Much of JTL’s history and influence remains under‑researched, leaving a rich field of study for future exploration.
